Lebanon Cluster Bomb
Directed by: Jawad Metni
United States / Lebanon / 2008 / HD Video / Arabic and English with English Subtitles
Free! Work In Progress, Presented with NYU A/P/A Institute
In the 2006 war between Hizbullah and Israel, one million cluster bomb munitions rained down upon the green fields and orchards of South Lebanon, the majority in the final 3 days. An estimated 35% failed to detonate. One year later, teams of locally recruited and trained deminers race to clear the land before more civilians are injured or killed. This documentary takes an intimate look into the lives of these brave Muslims and Christians, Sunnis and Shia, women and men. They work shoulder to shoulder in the sweltering heat to make their land safe again, while their country endures the worst political and economic crisis in 15 years.
Followed by Q&A with Jawad Metni moderated by Filmmaker Suzy Salamy.
Suzy Salamy has worked as a co-director/co-producer and videographer on two feature lengths documentaries. The films, "About Baghdad" and "Until When… "are set in the Middle East and deal directly with issues of oppression, occupation, racism and survival. "The Space In Between" is a documentary Salamy is co-directing with Cherien Dabis that chronicles the lives of three Arab Lesbians living in the Middle East. Salamy is currently producing a series on the Lebanon/Israeli war during the summer of 2006, for Deep Dish TV.
