"The Stories We Tell": Experimental Shorts Program
I am playing with the elements of the natural, unnatural and supernatural in order to explore female subjectivity to male desire and its subversion. The images in this video include romantic footage of myself spinning in a garden to the music of Dr. Zhivago originally rendered for a music box doll. This imagery is juxtaposed with a male doll that masturbates involuntarily and compulsively, raising potent questions about sexual relationships, perversions and autonomy. By turning the male figure into a doll and retaining my own 'real' female body, the work displaces expected power dynamics and diffuses the threat of violence by filtering it through a comic lens.
